Christmas
in Africa

Christmas is my favorite holiday. The season takes me back to my childhood in Africa and to the excitement that everyone shared. You see, the Christmas season in Africa is typically a carnival-like time when children and adults alike give into the excitement and spirit of the season.

The season starts about two weeks before Christmas and does not end until after the New Year. Prior to closing for the holiday, the schools host Christmas carol programs that the children take very seriously and participate in. Many people travel back to the villages to celebrate with extended family. Some families put up a Christmas tree (mostly in the city). Parents purchase cows, goats and fowl for the Christmas feast along with new clothing for the children, who will wear and show them off on Christmas day. Gifts and cards are exchanged among family and friends.
